When you first start tracking your clients in an Excel spreadsheet, you will probably start off with basic qualifiers. Name, contact information and a few designations about where they are at in the sales funnel. But as your business grows and your processes become more robust, the details surrounding each contact grow as well.

I agree and disagree. I think Virtualization has been over-applied for databases and storage, but when it comes to applications - deploying thousands of Node.js or Java nodes. I see many large companies moving toward technologies like OpenStack and Docker at the same time without experiencing a disconnect.

I've even seen companies running Mesos on OpenStack launching Docker containers as tasks. In this way I disagree that Hypervisors are "old-style." Instead, I'd suggest that Hypervisors are going to become irrelevant to application developers while they become increasingly important to Operations. The lines for the IT department are being drawn by containerization.

As we move towards more docker style (or more mesosphere style) it's pretty clear that old style hypervisors are probably not the future for running containers; we may run some VMs but we are moving towards bare metal to avoid the hypervisor performance tax.

The biggest problem for marketing automation vendors with purchased lists is keeping their own IPs and servers whitelisted with ISPs and spam filters. When it's only one company doing it, chances of being blacklisted are small. But when you get hundreds or thousands of clients emailing purchased lists and getting high spam/bounce rates, your IPs will be blacklisted really fast hurting everyone in the process not only the vendor.

I think the only way this can be "easily" fixed is to get vendors to offer clients custom IPs to prevent their own IPs from being blacklisted, so businesses that do not purchase lists do not get screwed along with those businesses that do use purchased lists.

More and more the people using BI tools aren't tech people! It's the marketing dept., or the finance team, or the supply chain team. If those non-tech people can't easily use the system or understand the data than who is really getting any value from it?

Yes, many WCM initiatives are being measured by their impact on web visits and I agree that these are quite soft in comparison to conversions. But I think some of the most important metrics for WCM investments fall into the cost savings category and not traffic generation. The number one metric almost all of our clients use to measure success is time to publish. Most WCM projects are designed to greatly reduce the time and effort it takes to publish content. This in turn enables to company to save on resource allocation and more importantly move allows the marketers to begin thinking about how they can personalize the content using decision engines and dynamic publishing to create unique web experiences.

BTW - It seems to me that personalization is only the first step in engagement. You can't always automate engagement...but you can put the crumbs out there to entice people into it. But the experience you create after that matters most.

Great post Chris. I see the world changing as well: from one of monolithic, institutionally-vetted content to one where engagement, reputation, and influence are key. And one where democratization is a key theme: your content may be polished and excellent, and even relevant...but if you're not augmenting it with the opinions and insight of your customers and partners, at best you're missing opportunity. Content still matters, but it seems to me that the system (and culture) of engagement you build matters the most.

Hi Ian. I agree with you. I too used to think of Silverpop as a dark horse in the automation world. I will say, one of the reasons we switched to Silverpop from one of the larger competitors was their ability to handle data. Some of our clients have very complicated logic schemes and Silverpop was better suited to handle their needs than others. We were at the Amplify conference as well. You might have seen us. Our company, Big Scary Cranium, picked up a couple of awards there. Anyway, great post. I'm looking forward to seeing your perspective as Silverpop falls deeper into the IBM world.
